Imagine if Austria-Hungary had survived WWI and found a way to become a modern state, perhaps by federalizing and giving more autonomy to the various ethnic groups. I think Europe would be very different today. Without the collapse of Austria-Hungary, we wouldn’t see the rise of many nationalist movements that eventually led to WWII. Maybe Eastern Europe would have avoided so much conflict?
